The Swamp Coolers bring back surf music

Most of the surfing that happens in Arizona is done on the Internet or TV channels, but a group of five
Valley musicians are playing the kind of music that makes listeners want to grab a board and catch a wave.

The Swamp Coolers are one of the top instrumental surf rock bands in the world. Their first CD, "Dry
Heat
", was recently named one of the 12 Top Surf Rock Albums Of All Time by Dan Epstein, Editor of
Revolver Magazine
. Their material ranges from classics such as Wipe Out and the Theme from Hawaii
Five-O to original tunes. The Phoenix-based band’s CDs have received excellent reviews and are
available on
iTunes, Napster, and all major MP3 download distributors.

The group is better known abroad than locally, having garnered world recognition from their cuts on the
Surf Guitar 101 CD and
Cordelia Record's "Beyond the Sea" British release. Their 2005 CD, "Dry
Heat
", is selling in 20 countries, from the US, to Europe, to Japan, to Australia and receives airplay on
every continent
. Instrumental surf music is extremely popular in Europe and on motion picture
soundtracks. The tunes are instantly familiar, and even the originals make listeners start talking about
their last trip to the beach, or start dancing.

“Surf music isn’t just for people who have a board,” said Steve Chernek. “It’s for everyone who dreams of
being at the ocean instead of sitting at their desk, or sweating in 118 degree summer weather. Surf music
is the stuff of daydreams.”

The individual musicians have a diverse musical history. Keel is no stranger to playing to crowds,
performing with Buddy Allen Owens, The Drifters and The Platters, The City Limits Band, and even with Up
With People in his high school years. Drummer Josh Garber has played everything from heavy metal, to
jazz, to African rhythms.  Rhythm player Chernek is an experienced studio musician. David DeStefano is a
veteran of the New York music scene. Mark Schufletowski spent a decade in the Amsterdam music scene
and Sarah King has played with Steelin' The Night Away (her all-girl steel drum band) for nearly two
decades.

“Most people in the Valley have never heard a live surf band, so we bring something new to audiences
with every performance,” Keel said.
